Heat Pump Owners: Living among us today

With another gas crisis looming, it looks like heat pump users are going to be in a better place financially than people on oil or gas.

So who are these people? Apparently they look like everyone else. As far as I know they are ordinary everyday people. There are 148 homes with heat pumps connected to my local electricity substation according to the network operator and I probably pass several people who have one every week at the shops, but you really can’t tell. It’s easier with the people with solar panels, because they tend to smile when they come out of the shop and see the sun is shining, and they may even check their phone to see if they are making money.

A woman explains a heat pump to a group outdoors near a beige house. People listen attentively on a sunny day, standing on grass.

Even easier are the EV drivers because they are the ones who spook you in the carpark and make an unearthly sound as they drive past; and owners also tend to leave them in front of their houses where you can see them, so we all know more people are getting electric cars these days.  But it’s hard to know who has a heat pump by just looking. I do know there must be a lot everywhere, because there are over 4400 of those substations in the country, and over 100,000 heat pumps were sold just in 2025 (some relieved people among them).

Maybe the current gas and oil prices will bring them out of their shells a bit so you can ask them how it’s going? Alternatively, there’s always the visit a heat pump website or the government’s clean energy one if you want to investigate it and check the grants available.
