We are looking for an energy advisor to join the Home Energy Advice Team (HEAT). The ideal candidate will have experience and understanding of home energy efficiency and retrofit, excellent organisational skills and a commitment to helping residents with practical solutions for energy reduction.
The HEAT service, a project coordinated by Zero Carbon Guildford, delivers independent in-person energy advice to Surrey residents, through a network of trained Energy Champions. The Champions conduct in-person surveys at residents’ homes, providing bespoke high-level advice and signposting residents to grants and support that help reduce energy bills, make their homes modern, comfortable and healthy, and reduce carbon emissions across Surrey.
The project is funded through the Energy Industry Voluntary Redress Scheme until April 2027.
This is a fixed term contract for an initial period of 6 months with potential to extend until April 2027.
Job description
This role supports the team with energy efficiency and retrofit expertise, as well as supporting project systems across all the project partners (not just Guildford).
Responsibilities:
Ensuring that home visits and follow up reports contain accurate and relevant information for householders, enabling them to take action to improve their home’s energy efficiency and reduce bills and carbon emissions.
Ensuring that ECs have relevant and accurate information to support their work, in the training they receive and additional written guidance and materials.
Organising EC training sessions - organising dates and venues, ensuring training content is appropriate, either delivering or commissioning internal or external speakers to deliver the training.
Reviewing and updating written guidance that we provide to householders (eg information about grants, advice on energy efficiency measures, updates on changes to national or local policies and practices that could affect home energy use).
Quality control of written reports to householders, including checking and sending out reports, plus providing feedback to ECs as needed (working with HEAT Manager and Coordinator) to support improvements in report writing.
Reviewing, updating and ensuring project systems are efficient, effective and well integrated (including registration, booking, report writing, monitoring and data management).
Supporting HEAT Coordinators to ensure content of events is relevant and useful for householders.
Providing expert advice as needed to enquiries from other members of the team, ECs and householders.
Any additional work to support the project as required and agreed with the HEAT Manager.
Person specification:
Excellent organisational skills
Experience of the HEAT project
Retrofit Assessor qualified
Passionate about energy reduction, tackling climate change and practical solutions to support residents.
Good people skills (particularly by email and phone).
Proficiency in using and learning new IT systems, especially spreadsheets and databases.
Good spoken and written English.
Familiarity with the geography of Surrey would be useful, but not essential.
You will need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate in order to carry out the role, as well as to provide references. Zero Carbon Guildford will fund the basic DBS check.
Practicalities
Working hours: 21 hours per week, flexible working hours in agreement with the HEAT Manager, with some evening and weekend work required.
Location: hybrid working (split between home and ZERO, Riverside Business Centre, Walnut Tree Close, Guildford, GU1 4UG), with occasional travel to events in other parts of Surrey.
Salary: £18,931.80 (FTE = £31,553)
Contract length: 6 month fixed term contract with potential to extend until April 2027. Ideal start date 29th September 2025.
Leave: 25 days plus bank holidays pa for full time employees, prorated to working hours.
