Guildford back in bloom

Floral colour will make a welcome return to the heart of Guildford this spring, thanks
to three local charities: Zero Carbon Guildford, Guildford in Bloom and Experience Guildford
adopting Guildford Borough Council’s long redundant on-street planters. Following a
cessation period of two years, nature and seasonal blooms will once again enrich the
lives of both residents, regular and first-time visitors.
A casualty of council spending cutbacks, nineteen town centre planters have
remained largely empty since 2024, with bare soil, litter and a scattering of plants
taking the place of the much-loved floral displays. Today (26th March 2026) sees the
launch of a community and charity initiative to bring seasonal and pollinator friendly
planting back into the centre of town.
Delivering a boost for native pollinators and Surrey wildlife, the replanting of these
on-street flower beds will crucially form part of the town’s wildlife corridor, linking the
busy, urban centre with surrounding rural habitats.
With planting plans well underway, plus action and maintenance responsibilities to
be divided across the three charities; supported by both by dedicated volunteers and
the wider community, Guildford is set for a blooming beautiful future.
“At Zero Carbon we are all about local solutions that make a real difference. Reviving the town centre’s neglected street planters is the perfect opportunity to improve air quality, boost wildlife and build a vibrant, connected community making Guildford and Surrey a greener, healthier and future forward place to live.” - Steph Bleach
