About the Event

In todays world of fast fashion, shops no longer produce seasonal collections but instead drop new lines weekly meaning people buy more clothes than they need, just to fit in with the latest trends. The major problem with this is the shocking impact our insatiable appetite for cheap clothing is having on the environment.

In collaboration with Gemma, an MSc student at The University of Surrey, ZERO Climate Cinema are thrilled to be offering this FREE screening.

Gemma is approaching the end of her MSc in Sustainable Development of The University of Surrey. Since starting her master’s degree at Surrey she has been particularly interested in how to effectively communicate sustainable messaging. As a result, for her final project, she will be conducting a study on the impact of environmental documentaries on their audiences, with a focus on the fast fashion industry. Environmental documentaries may have the ability to expand environmental worldviews by educating on a specific issue, creating a call to action on behalf of ecological or social causes. The fashion industry has been heavily criticised for the devastating environmental and social impacts caused by its global operations, leading to a call for large scale change in the industry and consumer purchasing habits. In collaboration with ZERO cinema, Gemma is holding a screening of ‘Stacey Dooley Investigates: Fashions Dirty Secrets’. This screening will be accompanied with voluntary surveys and a discussion, the results of which will be used for Gemma’s final dissertation project. All data collected will remain confidential and used solely for academic purposes.

In ‘Stacey Dooley Investigates; Fashions Dirty Secrets’ Stacey Dooley travels the world to uncover the hidden costs of our addiction to fast fashion. She will see for herself how toxic chemicals released by the garment industry are polluting waterways that millions of people rely on. She’ll witness the former Aral Sea once one of the largest bodies of fresh water now reduced almost entirely to dust. These are shocking discoveries likely to make you think twice about whether you really need those new clothes…
