About the Event

You could win a Living Wall To Help Reverse Surrey’s Biodiversity Loss!

11% of Surrey’s native species have gone extinct in the last few decades! What’s more, despite being one of the UK’s most wooded counties, our biodiversity loss is higher than the national average. But there’s a plan to reverse this worrying trend - and we want you to be involved!

Experience Guildford and Zero Carbon Guildford (ZCG) will be holding a joint event on World Habitat Day, October 2nd, to discuss what you can do to be part of a collaborative plan to reconnect habitats across Surrey, using urban greening measures in strategically mapped green corridors across the town centre.

Working with a number of partners, from Surrey Wildlife Trust to the Global Centre for Clean Air Research, ZCG will be supporting the uptake of urban greening measures by businesses across Guildford. Not only will this plan help to reverse the worrying trend of biodiversity decline - including the pollinators our local food growers rely on - but it will provide a host of co-benefits which will help the local community, and your social value scores! These benefits include:

o Increasing access to green space in urban areas

o Improving air quality, for which Guildford is sometimes the worst in England!

o Improving mental health and wellbeing via access to nature

o Increasing natural shading, which evidence shows lowers reliance on local public health services and reduction in skin cancer rates

o Improving rainwater absorption as a flood resilience measure

o Offering work experience and corporate volunteering opportunities

Join us and find out how you could win a living wall for your premises, and be part of the plan to restore nature and wildlife across Surrey.
