About the Event

About the event

The Mount is a beautiful area of chalk grassland, cared for and managed by The Mount Volunteers. Join Surrey Wildlife Trust for a hands‑on session exploring this special habitat and the wildlife it supports.

Learn a variety of plant and insect survey techniques while exploring the grassland and discovering what lives there. This event is ideal for anyone interested in nature, conservation, or developing survey skills, whether you’re a beginner or wanting to improve your skills.

What to expect on the day

  • No previous experience needed.

  • A safety briefing will be provided at the start of the session.

What to bring

Please dress appropriately for being outside with suitable sturdy footwear and long, light trousers (even if it is hot!) to safeguard against ticks, and other insect bites or stings.

If it is hot, please bring plenty of water with you and bring suncream and a sunhat as the area is quite exposed. We will be providing some refreshments, but it is important that you bring enough water too.

Tea, coffee and cake will be provided along with survey equipment.

If you can, please download the FIT (Flower-Insect-Timed) Count App in advance:

We will also have paper recording sheets available but the app makes life a little easier!

We will be providing identification resources but please feel free to bring along any books or ID guides that might help you – it might be worth labelling these to avoid getting them mixed up.

Meeting point

Meet by the Mount Volunteers Sign board, third field to the West on the North side of the Mount.
